Dr. Jeff Norman is an author, speaker, and advocate for laughter therapy whose personal journey from life-threatening illness to four triathlons became the foundation for a body of work that has helped thousands find healing through humor. His story is one of radical resilience, and this page is where it begins.

The Story Behind the Work

In 2003, Dr. Jeff Norman received a diagnosis that stopped him cold: end-stage kidney disease. His doctors were clear — short of dialysis or a transplant, there was nothing he could do to improve his condition. For most people, that would have been the end of the story.

Dr. Norman chose a different path. Drawing on emerging research into the physiological and psychological effects of humor, he committed to a revolutionary four-week program of laughter therapy. What happened next defied medical expectation: not only did his condition improve — he went on to compete in four triathlons. The diagnosis that was supposed to define his limits became the catalyst for the most expansive chapter of his life.

"The diagnosis that was supposed to define his limits became the catalyst for the most expansive chapter of his life."

That experience didn't just change his health — it changed his purpose. Dr. Norman emerged from his journey with a mission: to share the science, the practice, and the lived reality of laughter therapy with as many people as possible. His books, his speaking work, and his ongoing advocacy all flow from that single, life-altering moment of choosing to laugh.

About Dr. Jeff Norman

Dr. Jeff Norman — aka "The Laughter Guru" — is a chiropractic physician, international speaker, and author whose work bridges medicine, humor, and healing.

With more than thirty years in private practice, Dr. Norman has advanced training in the treatment of peripheral neuropathy, functional medicine, scoliosis, auto-accident injuries, and chronic pain and illness. In 1996, he was honored with the New Doctor of the Year award from the Utah Chiropractic Physicians' Association, an organization he has served in numerous capacities, including as chairman of its board of directors. He co-owns Wellspring Advanced Health and is the founder of the Balance and Performance Centers of America, both based in St. George, Utah.

But it was a diagnosis in 2003 that changed the course of his life's work. Given a serious diagnosis of end-stage kidney disease and told that nothing short of dialysis or a transplant could help him, Dr. Norman made an unlikely choice: he laughed. Following a four-week program of laughter therapy he developed himself, he didn't just manage his "unimprovable" condition — he improved it dramatically, eventually going on to compete in four triathlons. That experience became the foundation for his book, The Healing Power of Laughter, and for a mission he's carried ever since: showing others that joy and humor aren't just feel-good ideas, but legitimate tools for healing.

He is also the author of Overcoming Burnout: 7 Steps to Rekindling the Fire and Becoming Passionately Engaged in Your Life, and has spoken to thousands of people across the United States and beyond on topics ranging from stress management and relationships to defining success and achieving personal goals.

Outside the clinic and the stage, Dr. Norman is the lead singer of "Captain Morgan & the Menders" — by his own admission, a fairly awful 70's rock band. He lives in St. George, Utah, with Carrie, his wife of thirty-nine years, and their two Yorkies. Together they have four children and two grandchildren.
